Dr. Stutte is plant physiologist has worked with biological systems for space at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Florida since 1992. Dr. Stutte was a principal investigator on NASA Biomass Production Chamber, a multi-level test-bed, to demonstrate the feasibility of using plants as bio regenerative life support systems.  

 

Dr. Stutte been the principal investigator on multiple experiments investigating the role of space-flight conditions on plant development on the International Space Station.  Dr. Stutte has led research to determine impact lighting, temperature and nutrition on productivity of crops being considered for long duration space missions.  Most recently Dr. Stutte was Marie Curie Senior Research Fellow at Limerick Institute of Technology, Ireland where he applied controlled environment technology developed for space to production of high-value products on Earth.  Dr. Stutte is lead scientist on SyNRGE experiment series being conducted on  the International Space Station, evaluation of salad crops use in space, and is actively development national and international collaboration for utilization of controlled environment technology.

 

Dr. Stutte is active in many professional societies, and as chair of the Controlled Environment Working Group of American Society for Horticultural Science, past chair and board member of USDA Committee on Controlled Environment Technology and Use, Past President and board member of Plant Growth Regulation Society of American, and is Executive Director and founding member of the American Council for Medicinally Active Plants.   

 

Dr. Stutte is recipient of numerous awards including ASHS Outstanding Industry Scientist Award (2008).   Dr. Stutte obtained his PhD from University of California, Davis, California and was on the Department of Horticulture Faculty at the University of Maryland prior to developing plant growth systems for NASA.

 

Dr.  Stutte has authored or co-authored 145 scientific articles on horticulture, controlled environments, and space agriculture and technology.
